My Clumber Spaniel Violet proved to be a challenge for me in training. I have had dogs my whole life but Violet was different; she was born with attitude. Initially it was endearing but as she got older and stronger, her determination and intelligence proved difficult to manage. Violet was a nibbler and she particularly liked fingers but this turned to nipping and every T-shirt of mine had tears in it. I tried everything to deter her from this behavior, as well as her digging, chewing, chasing the cat, nightmare walks on the leash etc. I was at my wits end and was not sure I would be able to keep her; my heart was broken. I had tried private lessons, and although some progress was made it was not enough.
I began researching alternatives and found Atlantic K9. I was reluctant at first because of the use of the e-collar. Both Kathleen and Jenny talked me through it and recommended bootcamp. It was after several very patient conversations on their part I decided that bootcamp was the best choice. I had concerns that it would change her joyful personality because despite her problem behaviors she was sweet, friendly and very loving.
Violet came home and the problem behaviors were responding to commands with the assistance of the e-collar, and I was very happy to know that it did not cause her pain; it was an annoyance that she knew required her to respond positively. Bootcamp taught Violet and also me how best to respond and manage the behaviors. It still requires practice with her as she is very stubborn and clever and I have to be a step ahead of her, but we are finally finding some harmony together.
Violet has in many ways changed my life as I do suffer with severe arthritis and she has helped me to be more active. Violet is my sweet little girl and I am so grateful to all the staff at Atlantic K9 for helping me build that lifelong bond with her. There is nothing like the love and loyalty that a dog can bring to your life. I have used Atlantic K9 for intermittent boarding and daycare and I trust that they will always show her love and affection when I am away.
